South Korea has been without a head coach since Hong Myung-bo stepped down after the 2026 World Cup group-stage exit. The Korea Football Association (KFA) has yet to open the process for appointing a new coach. Xavi’s interest-combined with his Asian ties-has sparked speculation about a potential move.

Xavi made 133 appearances for Spain and led Barcelona to titles including the 2010 World Cup, Euro 2008, and Euro 2012. His coaching career began in Qatar with Al-Sadd, where he worked with players like Jung Woo-young and Nam Tae-hee. "If I show interest in Asian nations, Korea could be a candidate," he noted.
After stepping away from club management for several seasons, Xavi won La Liga in 2022–23 with Barcelona. His Asian experience and understanding of Korean players are seen as major pluses. His direct mention of the Asian Cup has only fueled expectations among South Korea fans.
