Xavi eyes South Korea job: 'World Cup & Asian Cup fits my style'

Xavi Hernández, the former Spain and Barcelona midfielder, has expressed interest in taking charge of South Korea ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In a recent interview with Spain’s RNE, he stated, "The national team role fits me perfectly," adding, "I can’t spend much time with my kids at clubs, but honestly, the national team is just right for me." He also hinted at leading teams at major tournaments like the World Cup, Euros, Africa Cup of Nations, and the Asian Cup.

South Korea has been without a head coach since Hong Myung-bo stepped down after the 2026 World Cup group-stage exit. The Korea Football Association (KFA) has yet to open the process for appointing a new coach. Xavi’s interest-combined with his Asian ties-has sparked speculation about a potential move.

Xavi’s resume and Asian links

Xavi made 133 appearances for Spain and led Barcelona to titles including the 2010 World Cup, Euro 2008, and Euro 2012. His coaching career began in Qatar with Al-Sadd, where he worked with players like Jung Woo-young and Nam Tae-hee. "If I show interest in Asian nations, Korea could be a candidate," he noted.

After stepping away from club management for several seasons, Xavi won La Liga in 2022–23 with Barcelona. His Asian experience and understanding of Korean players are seen as major pluses. His direct mention of the Asian Cup has only fueled expectations among South Korea fans.

KFA’s call and next coaching candidates

The South Korea national team head coach role remains vacant. Paulo Bento, Gus Poyet, and Javier Aguirre have been floated as candidates, but the KFA has not yet set a process. Xavi’s potential interest hinges on how-and when-the KFA moves forward.

If Xavi’s overture gains traction, he could bring a fresh style to South Korea ahead of the 2026 World Cup. A match between his tactical approach and the team’s needs could prove a winning formula for both sides.

South Korea currently sits third in FIFA World Cup 2026 with 3 points from 3 games, on a recent form of LLW. They trail leaders Mexico by 6 points in the title race.
