Following the national team's elimination from the World Cup in a group stage, which sparked criticism, the South Korean police have launched an investigation into the appointment process of former coach Hong Myung-bo. According to Yonhap News, the police searched the Football Association on June 6th for alleged misconduct including obstruction of duty.
The appointment process of Hong Myung-bo has been a subject of criticism since the World Cup failure. Hong stated during a parliamentary hearing on July 30 that there were no issues with his appointment process. However, the police had initiated an investigation based on complaints from civic groups in 2021 but have yet to reach a conclusion.
The recent World Cup defeat has reignited the police's investigation into whether there was improper interference by former association president Kim Mong-gyu and others during Hong’s appointment. Yonhap News reported that the police had gathered information from Hong on April 4th.
