Robert Moreno has been named the interim head coach of the South Korea men's national football team. The Korea Football Association approved Moreno's appointment during a board meeting at Korea Football Park in Cheonan on Tuesday.
The 48-year-old Spaniard has signed a contract running through November 27 and will lead the team in its next six international matches. This move comes after Hong Myung-bo resigned in late June following the country's group-stage exit from the FIFA World Cup. South Korea currently sits 3rd in the World Cup standings with 3 points from 3 games, recording 1 win and 2 losses, having scored 2 goals and conceded 3 for a -1 goal difference. They trail leaders Mexico by 6 points.
Which matches will he oversee
Moreno's first test will be a home match against Ecuador on September 24. This is followed by further home friendlies against Uruguay on September 28, Venezuela on October 2, and Uzbekistan on October 6. The KFA is seeking to schedule two more matches during the November 9-17 FIFA international window. All these fixtures serve as vital preparation for the AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia beginning in January. The team's recent performance data is available on our stats page.
What is his coaching background
Robert Moreno has built his career primarily in Europe. He first gained prominence as a long-time assistant to manager Luis Enrique, serving as his right-hand man during Enrique's tenures at AS Roma, Celta Vigo, and FC Barcelona. He later stepped out as a head coach, taking charge of Ligue 1's AS Monaco in France, Spain's Granada, and FC Sochi in Russia. He also previously worked as a scout for FC Barcelona. "I am honored to take on this responsibility and will do my best to help the team succeed," Moreno said.
What is the team's current form
South Korea's most recent official result was a 1-0 loss to South Africa in the World Cup on June 25, 2026. Their form over the last five matches shows 3 wins and 2 losses (LLWWW), and they have lost their last two outings. Breaking this streak and establishing a new system will be Moreno's immediate challenge. The current squad roster and player positions can be viewed in detail on our squad page.
What does the upcoming schedule look like
Moreno's official debut against Ecuador is set for September 24. The subsequent four matches in September and October are expected to focus on building match sharpness, considering the opposition and home advantage. If the additional November fixtures are confirmed, they will serve as a critical final assessment before selecting the Asian Cup squad. All scheduled international match dates can be found on our fixtures page. Robert Moreno's interim contract is valid until November 27.
