Lee Kang-in (23) completed his induction into Atletico Madrid on 18 July 2024, leaving Paris Saint-Germain and signing a contract until 2031, wearing the number 7 shirt.
The most striking figure at the ceremony was team captain Coke. Lee said, “Coke reached out first, telling me that this club was great and that he wanted me to join. That contact had a huge influence on my decision to move.”
Coke was more than just a teammate for Lee. He said, “I’ve admired this legend since I was young, and I think I’ll learn a lot by playing alongside him.”
Lee’s reasons for choosing Atletico were clear. He explained, “From the moment I received the offer, I wanted to win many trophies with this team. My goal is to help the team and win together.”
Returning to the Spanish stage felt special. After growing up in Valencia and Mallorca and then moving to PSG, Lee remarked, “This is the stage where I grew as a footballer. I’m excited and thrilled to play in La Liga again.”
His first meeting with manager Diego Simeone left a strong impression. Lee said, “Simeone’s passion is truly special. That energy is transmitted throughout the squad. The training intensity is high, but the time spent together is enjoyable.”
Regarding the symbolic number 7, Lee shared his thoughts: “Number 7 is indeed special, but what matters more than the number is dedicating oneself to the team.” He emphasized responsibility over burden.
He also expressed gratitude to Korean fans. Recalling his debut match at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, Lee said, “Playing my first game in front of Korean fans is a moment I’ll never forget. I promise to perform well so that more fans can support Atletico.”
Lee’s official La Liga debut is likely to be against Malaga in the opening match. He earned a starting spot in the final preseason game and is being considered for the opening-day lineup, heightening expectations.
He set a clear goal: “The most important mindset is to win every match. With great players and coaching staff, if I give my best every day, I can achieve the desired goals.”
